NEWS FROM THE FIELDS

NEW FIELDS – NEW RULES!

In addition to the new fields being constructed on Randall’s Island, RISF, working with the City Parks Department, is implementing new guidelines. These new guidelines will bring Randall’s Island inline with other city parks and will ensure that the new fields remain in optimal condition and can be enjoyed for generations to come.

A key component of the new guidelines is the “Red Flag Policy”. When a field is deemed unsuitable for play, due to maintenance or weather conditions, a “red flag” (left) will be placed on the field to convey that the field is “offline” and not to be used. RISF will be setting up a 24-hour Fields Hotline which Park users can call for
the latest advisories.

In addition to the “Red Flag Policy” users are being asked to help care for the fields and respect the time limits on their permits. If users stay within their permit limits, everyone can stay on schedule.

Also included in the guidelines are prohibitions on driving on the fields, alcohol, glass bottles and amplified music. Barbecuing will be restricted to designated areas of the Island.

IN NEXT MONTH’S ISSUE – NEW FIELD NUMBERS AND SIGNAGE

In our next issue we will unveil the new field numbering system. The new signage will help Park users find
their fields as well as restrooms, parking areas and other Park facilities.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
News from the Fields provides updates every month on the latest construction progress throughout the Randall’s Island Sports Fields Development. Anyone who has been on the Island recently can see that construction is ongoing just about everywhere on the Island, on the fields and along the park drives and sidewalks.

As you can see on the left, some of the new park drives along the southern end of the island are starting to take shape. Curbs have been installed and pocket parking areas has been built to ensure that cars stay off of the new fields. Park Drive along new East River Fields

Throughout these cold and wet winter months, our contractor has been hard at work. Utility installation throughout the fields and the park drives has been ongoing. Work in the Bronx Shore fields will commence early this fall.

The roads throughout the Island are generally restricted to one lane to accommodate electrical and water infrastructure upgrades. Those taking a bus or driving around the Island should do so with caution due to detours and restrictions. Many major storm water utility lines and water mains are being placed under the roads to facilitate future servicing. Placement of the utilities under the roads ensures that maintenance or service may be done with minimal impact to the Island.
